Why your goals should excite (and scare) you!
I love the quote by Joe Vitale, ‘a goal should scare you a little, and excite you a lot’.
Recently I’ve been reassessing my goals, and some of them are more than a little scary! One of the reasons I love goal setting is because it gives me clarity and focus on what I should be spending my time on.
I feel like having this sense of direction gives me permission to focus on what’s really important to me and to say no to things that could possibly derail – or at least postpone - my success.
Having clear goals (and a plan!) gives me a greater sense of structure and control.
Setting effective goals involves five not-always-simple steps:
You first need to work out your objectives – what do you want to achieve? And why is this important?
Break down the steps and the key milestones – one of my friends recently told me she has signed up for her first marathon. It’s in nine months, so she has plenty of time to prepare – however she first needs to work out all the steps involved. While it seems simple, run 42km, she needs a structured training program.
Work out what support and resources you need.
Create an action plan.
Start!
Do you have goals you’re working towards? Or is it time to set some?
