Why your goals should excite (and scare) you!

I love the quote by Joe Vitale, ‘a goal should scare you a little, and excite you a lot’.

Recently I’ve been reassessing my goals, and some of them are more than a little scary! One of the reasons I love goal setting is because it gives me clarity and focus on what I should be spending my time on.

I feel like having this sense of direction gives me permission to focus on what’s really important to me and to say no to things that could possibly derail – or at least postpone - my success.

Having clear goals (and a plan!) gives me a greater sense of structure and control.

Setting effective goals involves five not-always-simple steps:

  1. You first need to work out your objectives – what do you want to achieve? And why is this important?

  2. Break down the steps and the key milestones – one of my friends recently told me she has signed up for her first marathon. It’s in nine months, so she has plenty of time to prepare – however she first needs to work out all the steps involved. While it seems simple, run 42km, she needs a structured training program.

  3. Work out what support and resources you need.

  4. Create an action plan.

  5. Start!

Do you have goals you’re working towards? Or is it time to set some?
