Why self-confidence matters for leaders
There have been many times in my life when I have battled the poor-self-confidence demons.
The negative self-talk, avoiding challenges due to fear of failure, procrastination, and imposter syndrome have all had too much time in my head.
Thanks to a lot of hard work, some tough love, and some great friends and mentors, I am a lot more confident today than even three years ago.
Self-confidence gives us the ability to lead with purpose, resilience, and clarity.
In a study by Melbourne University, involving employees from large corporations in Melbourne, researchers concluded that “self-confidence is a key determinant of workplace success.”
This is because low self-confidence can affect our ability to lead with impact.
Luckily, self-confidence is a quality which can be developed and improved.
When we are self-confident, we are more likely to:
Communicate in ways that motivate, educate and inspire
Be listened to
Have the courage to have hard conversations
Be calm when things go wrong
Be trusted.
